Digital
Digital Engineering for Energy Assets
Digital engineering connects physical assets to trusted operational data, software and engineering context so teams can see, maintain and act on equipment more effectively. SMEC starts with the asset, available OT data and the decision that needs to improve, then selects the appropriate connectivity, monitoring, maintenance, digital-twin or video-analytics layer.
Sequence
Define the operating decision → audit data sources → connect only required tags/signals → contextualize assets → visualize/alert → link maintenance or engineering action → measure the outcome.
Brownfield first
Many assets already have PLCs, SCADA, meters and cameras. The first question is what usable data already exists, what is missing, and what decision changes if it is connected.
Architecture considerations
- Data ownership and retention
- Cloud vs on-premise policy
- Network segmentation and approved gateways
- Read-only vs control paths
- Protocol/tag mapping
- Historian, SCADA, ERP and CMMS integration
- User roles/access
- Cybersecurity review to client requirements
- Offline/low-bandwidth operation
Common questions
Can this solution work with existing systems?
Installed-base compatibility is assessed first. Integration depends on available PLC/SCADA, camera, protocol, network and data interfaces and on project cybersecurity requirements.
Does implementation require replacing existing equipment?
Not necessarily. The preferred approach is to determine what can remain, what data can be exposed safely and what interface or edge components are required.
What information is needed to assess feasibility?
Share the existing architecture, make/model, available protocols or data sources, required use case, site/network constraints and the decisions or events that need to be visible.

Send the requirement
Request a digital asset assessment: send one asset, available data sources and the decision that needs to improve. Recommended RFQ inputs: project/asset, existing OEM/model, scope, drawings or specification, required date, site location, and any shutdown/mobilization constraint.
