PAGA System
Customized solutions for safety communication
PAGA systems distribute operational announcements and emergency alarms across noisy, hazardous and distributed industrial environments. SMEC can support project-specific PAGA architecture, field devices, control interfaces, zoning, integration and commissioning subject to the approved system design.

Make Every Critical Message Reach the Right Location
In a drilling or process facility, communication is an operational system. PAGA, talkback, local alarms and control-room communications need clear zoning, audibility, survivability and interfaces with emergency procedures.
Technical scope / product architecture
- Central control/amplification architecture
- Hazardous-area speakers/beacons where specified
- Call/announcement stations
- Alarm tone and zoning logic
- ESD/F&G interface as project-defined
- Cabling/interface engineering
- FAT/SAT and commissioning
What SMEC adds
Engineering, interface definition, panel/package build, software/configuration where applicable, FAT, site installation support, SAT/commissioning and lifecycle support.
How it works
Emergency announcements — PAGA distributes prioritised paging, tones and general alarms across defined facility zones.
Talkback — Driller/talkback provides operational two-way communication between rig locations; it is not interchangeable with emergency PAGA.
Coverage — Speaker layout, noise mapping and intelligibility testing determine audibility in operating areas.
Resilience — Power backup, network redundancy, hazardous-area stations and F&G interfaces follow the facility emergency plan.
Key components
Public address and general alarm. Alarm thresholds, priorities, delays and operator actions must be documented to avoid nuisance alarms and missed critical events.
Driller/Talkback. The driller/talkback is selected for the equipment, operating duty and site conditions.
Industrial intercom. The industrial intercom is selected for the equipment, operating duty and site conditions.
Paging stations. The paging stations is selected for the equipment, operating duty and site conditions.
Speakers/beacons. Speaker and beacon location, acoustic output and alarm priority are based on noise conditions, coverage zones and emergency communication requirements.
Alarm tones. Alarm thresholds, priorities, delays and operator actions must be documented to avoid nuisance alarms and missed critical events.
Zone control. The zone control is selected for the equipment, operating duty and site conditions.
Equipment racks. The equipment racks is selected for the equipment, operating duty and site conditions.
PLC/F&G interfaces. The plc/f&g interfaces is selected for the equipment, operating duty and site conditions.
Upgrades & retrofits
Expand speaker zones or talkback stations following an acoustic review.
Replace ageing analogue equipment with a project-approved digital architecture.
Improve UPS redundancy and F&G/PAGA interface diagnostics.
Retrofit scope depends on existing OEM interfaces, component condition, available space, shutdown windows and the approval basis of any safety-related functions.
Applications
- Land rigs
- Offshore rigs
- Refineries
- Terminals
- Industrial plants
Testing & documentation
Relevant IEC, ISO, API, classification-society, hazardous-area or functional-safety requirements must be selected according to the specific system and installation. Where applicable, the project package may include electrical drawings, GA layouts, datasheets, I/O schedules, cause-and-effect, communication lists, inspection records, FAT/SAT procedures, calibration records and as-built documents. No unverified compliance certification is claimed here.

Common questions
Can PAGA Public Address & General Alarm System be supplied for new build, retrofit or replacement?
The lifecycle route depends on the installed base, condition, interfaces, obsolescence and project requirements. SMEC can assess new-build, retrofit, repair or replacement scope where technically valid.
Can existing field wiring or interfaces be retained?
Possibly. Retention depends on survey findings, condition, ratings, compatibility, safety requirements, documentation and the cutover strategy.
What information is required for quotation?
Send the make/model or required specification, datasheets, drawings, ratings, interfaces, fault details where applicable, site location and required date or shutdown/mobilization window.
Is driller talkback the same as PAGA?
No. Talkback supports operational two-way communications; PAGA distributes announcements and alarms.
Can PAGA interface with F&G?
Yes, with a documented cause-and-effect and alarm priority philosophy.
What determines speaker quantity?
Noise conditions, area layout, intelligibility requirements and site standards.
