Jacking Control System
Delivering spontaneous and precise systems for hassle-free operations
Jacking systems coordinate motors/drives, brakes, pinion/rack machinery, leg position and load-related signals during elevated-risk rig moves. SMEC supports control-system engineering, modernization, operator interfaces, diagnostics and integration around the installed jacking machinery.

01Overview
About the RPD System Jacking Control System
SMEC jacking system consists of a security feature which is the fail-safe monitoring system. This fail-safe monitoring system will come in handy if the operator can't respond to a warning signal in proper time. So in case of any emergency, the fail-safe monitoring system will shut down the jack-up process.
01Why SMEC?
- Single cord jacking can be done with daisy wheel sensor
- SMEC Jacking system can use hydraulic as well as electric motor system too
- SMEC Jacking system can be controlled by an advanced control system that are futuristic
- The hydraulic jacking system will come in handy during the installation process
- SMEC hydraulic jacking system provides hydrodynamic and aerodynamic characters
- The jacking system will be protected from mechanical or environmental hazards by the jacking house
- The monitoring system will be useful for the operator to achieve accurate measurements with the help of proper electronic and mechanical systems
- Automated operation
- Real-time monitoring and controlling can be achieved
- Advanced display which provides all the relevant information such as the RPD information

Jacking Control That Understands Load, Motion and Interlocks
Jack-up rig jacking is a coordinated mechanical and electrical operation. Control-system engineering must respect motor groups, brakes, leg movement, operating limits and the relationships between machinery feedback and operator commands.
Technical scope / product architecture
- PLC/HMI and operator controls
- Motor/drive and brake interfaces
- Position/limit signals
- Load/RPD interfaces
- Alarm/interlock logic
- Condition-monitoring interfaces where available
- FAT and commissioning
What SMEC adds
Engineering, interface definition, panel/package build, software/configuration where applicable, FAT, site installation support, SAT/commissioning and lifecycle support.
How it works
Drive groups — Jack-up legs use coordinated motor/gearbox/brake groups; drive sequencing and permissives must respect load sharing and rig-specific operating limits.
Feedback — Position, speed, brake status, motor current and load information support operation and fault diagnosis.
Interlocks — Emergency stops, travel limits, brake-release confirmation and safe-mode transitions follow OEM-approved logic.
Mechanical condition — Control modernisation does not remove the need to assess rack/pinion wear, gearbox condition and brake performance.
Key components
Motor group sequencing. The motor group sequencing is selected for the equipment, operating duty and site conditions.
Brake release logic. Brake status and release permissives must be verified against the machine operating sequence, including stop and loss-of-power scenarios.
Leg position. The leg position is selected for the equipment, operating duty and site conditions.
Load and current monitoring. Load measurement requires a verified mechanical load path, correctly sized sensor, signal conditioning and traceable calibration.
Speed control. The speed control is selected for the equipment, operating duty and site conditions.
Alarms and interlocks. Permissives and trips prevent unsafe sequencing, such as enabling a drive without cooling, lubrication, breaker readiness or the required machinery state.
Operator stations. The operator stations is selected for the equipment, operating duty and site conditions.
Drive/PLC retrofit. The drive/plc retrofit is selected for the equipment, operating duty and site conditions.
Upgrades & retrofits
Migrate PLC/HMI while retaining proven motor/brake hardware if approved.
Add motor-current, brake and gearbox condition data.
Integrate RPD visibility and enhanced event diagnostics subject to OEM limits.
Retrofit scope depends on existing OEM interfaces, component condition, available space, shutdown windows and the approval basis of any safety-related functions.
Applications
- Jack-up rigs
- Rig life extension
- Jacking system retrofit
Testing & documentation
Relevant IEC, ISO, API, classification-society, hazardous-area or functional-safety requirements must be selected according to the specific system and installation. Where applicable, the project package may include electrical drawings, GA layouts, datasheets, I/O schedules, cause-and-effect, communication lists, inspection records, FAT/SAT procedures, calibration records and as-built documents. No unverified compliance certification is claimed here.

Common questions
Can Jack-Up Rig Jacking Control System be supplied for new build, retrofit or replacement?
The lifecycle route depends on the installed base, condition, interfaces, obsolescence and project requirements. SMEC can assess new-build, retrofit, repair or replacement scope where technically valid.
Can existing field wiring or interfaces be retained?
Possibly. Retention depends on survey findings, condition, ratings, compatibility, safety requirements, documentation and the cutover strategy.
What information is required for quotation?
Send the make/model or required specification, datasheets, drawings, ratings, interfaces, fault details where applicable, site location and required date or shutdown/mobilization window.
Can jacking controls be upgraded independently of gearboxes?
Sometimes, but the mechanical condition and instrumentation must be assessed together.
How does this relate to RPD monitoring?
RPD is a related measurement and protection concern that should be linked to jacking control.
What should be supplied for an RFQ?
Jacking OEM, motor/gearbox details, existing schematics, alarms and retrofit scope.
