Solutions
Turnkey Engineering & System Solutions for Critical Energy Assets
For a defined system or project package, SMEC can provide a single engineering and execution chain from scope definition to operational handover. The model is designed for buyers who do not want to coordinate separate engineering, panel, software, integration and commissioning vendors for the same technical boundary.
Electrical. Automation. Instrumentation. Hydraulics. Digitalisation. One Integrated Engineering Scope.
Complex industrial projects rarely involve a single system. Electrical power must work with automation. Instrumentation must communicate with control systems. Hydraulic equipment must respond to operating commands. Safety systems must coordinate with machinery, and critical asset information must remain accessible throughout the equipment lifecycle.
SMEC supports multidisciplinary engineering projects across oil and gas, offshore drilling, marine, power and heavy industry—from design, manufacturing and integration to repair, calibration, refurbishment, retrofit, modernisation, testing and commissioning.

Project Evidence
2,000 HP Drilling Rig — Integrated Electrical and Control Reactivation
A dismantled drilling rig required electrical and control-system restoration. SMEC’s previously referenced scope included rewiring, VFD House and MCC integration, ABB module servicing, busbar engineering and control-system reprogramming.
Engineering Approach — One engineering scope across the asset lifecycle
A multidisciplinary package should be planned as one coordinated project rather than separate electrical, automation, instrumentation, hydraulic and digital work orders. Concept and detailed engineering define boundaries, equipment duties, site interfaces, procurement responsibilities, acceptance criteria and the execution sequence.
That same approach applies to ageing assets. A scope may combine troubleshooting, repair, calibration, refurbishment, retrofit, control migration and digital monitoring before recommissioning. Retaining serviceable equipment can be considered where compatibility, safety and lifecycle support are demonstrated; replacement is selected where technical risks justify it.
Common questions
What does SMEC mean by turnkey?
Turnkey means responsibility for a defined system or package scope from engineering and procurement through build, integration, FAT, site execution and commissioning. It does not automatically mean whole-facility EPC responsibility.
Can SMEC work from FEED or tender documents?
Yes, where the scope and available project documents are sufficient to define requirements, interfaces, exclusions and deliverables. Clarifications are closed before final responsibility is agreed.
Can SMEC integrate multi-OEM systems?
SMEC can engineer interfaces across project-approved OEM equipment where protocols, electrical boundaries, data, documentation and access are available.
Does turnkey include site installation?
Site installation, testing and commissioning can be included when they are part of the agreed commercial and technical scope.
What documents are needed?
Typical inputs include BOQ, P&IDs, SLDs, I/O lists, datasheets, control philosophy, vendor list, standards, site conditions and project schedule.
Can one project include electrical, automation, instrumentation and hydraulics?
Yes. Multidisciplinary scopes can be evaluated with defined interfaces, responsibilities, deliverables and specialist requirements.
Does turnkey work include repair and modernisation?
It can include engineering, manufacture, integration, calibration, repair, refurbishment, retrofit, upgrades, FAT/SAT and commissioning, depending on the contract.
Can existing assets be retained?
The engineering review can identify equipment suitable for retention, repair or upgrade rather than automatically recommending full replacement.
