Onshore Wellhead & Skid Control Systems

Wellhead and skid control panels run the local sequences for a well pad or a packaged skid — pressures, temperatures, valve positions and equipment states — while an RTU or PLC interface carries alarms and operating data to a central SCADA. SMEC engineers the panel, its protective interfaces and its telemetry around remote power, site exposure and field maintainability, so that a loss of communications does not defeat a locally required protective function.

01

Field-Ready Controls for Wellheads and Packaged Equipment

Distributed onshore assets demand controls that are maintainable in the field and visible from the operations centre. SMEC can engineer wellhead and skid controls around local operating logic, protective interfaces, telemetry and the realities of remote power and communications.

02

How it works

Local control — Wellhead/skid panels acquire pressures, temperatures, valve positions and equipment states while executing defined local sequences.

Remote connectivity — RTU/PLC interfaces can transmit alarms and operational data to a central SCADA system via site-approved telecoms.

Safety boundaries — Loss of communications must not defeat locally required protective functions.

Remote deployment — Power availability, solar/DC options, dust/heat exposure and field maintainability influence enclosure and hardware selection.

Key components

Wellhead control panels. Panel layout, ingress protection, segregation, component selection and service clearance follow the installation environment, load schedule and maintenance requirements.

PLC/RTU. An RTU acquires remote station measurements and status, timestamps events and exchanges authorised commands with SCADA while preserving local control on link loss.

Valve actuation interfaces. Valve actuation and position feedback must follow the approved process control and fail-safe philosophy, including loss-of-power behaviour.

Pressure/temperature/flow inputs. The pressure/temperature/flow inputs is selected for the equipment, operating duty and site conditions.

Pump/compressor skids. The pump/compressor skids is selected for the equipment, operating duty and site conditions.

Local HMI. The local hmi is selected for the equipment, operating duty and site conditions.

Remote alarms. Alarm thresholds, priorities, delays and operator actions must be documented to avoid nuisance alarms and missed critical events.

SCADA communications. SCADA consolidates remote station measurements, alarms, trends and supervisory commands; local protective functions remain in field controls.

Upgrades & retrofits

Replace legacy RTUs or PLCs without disturbing essential local protection.

Add telemetry, event logging and remote diagnostics.

Extend instrumentation and skid integration for additional production equipment.

Retrofit scope depends on existing OEM interfaces, component condition, available space, shutdown windows and the approval basis of any safety-related functions.

05

Applications

  • Land well pads
  • Production skids
  • Gathering stations
  • Remote oilfields
06

Testing & documentation

Relevant IEC, ISO, API, classification-society, hazardous-area or functional-safety requirements must be selected according to the specific system and installation. Where applicable, the project package may include electrical drawings, GA layouts, datasheets, I/O schedules, cause-and-effect, communication lists, inspection records, FAT/SAT procedures, calibration records and as-built documents. No unverified compliance certification is claimed here.

Common questions

Can existing RTUs be reused?

Possibly, after checking spare capacity, protocol support and lifecycle condition.

What happens if telemetry fails?

Local safe-state behaviour must follow the approved control philosophy.

What is needed for a quote?

P&IDs, I/O list, wellhead/skid equipment details, power and communications requirements.
