Explosion-Proof CCTV & Perimeter Security
Exproof CCTV surveillance
Industrial CCTV in hazardous and offshore environments requires more than camera selection. SMEC supports camera/VMS architecture, hazardous-area equipment selection to project certification requirements, network/power interfaces, control-room integration and selected AI video analytics through NexView.

Industrial Surveillance Designed for Hazardous and High-Risk Sites
Industrial CCTV is not only about image capture. For oil and gas sites, the architecture must address hazardous-area suitability, coverage, network resilience, recording, access control and the events operators need to investigate.
Technical scope / product architecture
- Hazardous-area camera architecture
- VMS and recording
- Network/fibre/power interfaces
- Control-room displays
- Perimeter and selected analytics
- NexView integration
- Site survey, FAT/SAT and commissioning
What SMEC adds
Engineering, interface definition, panel/package build, software/configuration where applicable, FAT, site installation support, SAT/commissioning and lifecycle support.
How it works
Camera selection — Fixed/PTZ/thermal and Ex-rated cameras are chosen according to coverage, light, process hazards and zone classification.
Network — Video bandwidth, storage retention, UPS, cybersecurity and network resilience must be sized as one system.
Installation — Camera/enclosure certification, mounting, cable glands and environmental protection must match the hazardous-area requirements.
Key components
Ex-rated camera options. Camera selection considers hazardous-area approval where applicable, field of view, lighting, lens, environmental protection and network/storage capacity.
PTZ and fixed cameras. Camera selection considers hazardous-area approval where applicable, field of view, lighting, lens, environmental protection and network/storage capacity.
Thermal imaging interfaces. The thermal imaging interfaces is selected for the equipment, operating duty and site conditions.
Perimeter intrusion. The perimeter intrusion is selected for the equipment, operating duty and site conditions.
Video management. The video management is selected for the equipment, operating duty and site conditions.
Event alarms. Alarm thresholds, priorities, delays and operator actions must be documented to avoid nuisance alarms and missed critical events.
Recording and storage. The recording and storage is selected for the equipment, operating duty and site conditions.
Control-room integration. The control-room integration is selected for the equipment, operating duty and site conditions.
Configurations & options
Project-engineered options can include the following, where technically appropriate and approved for the installation:
Operational events: Perimeter intrusion, restricted-area monitoring and alarm interfaces may be added through approved VMS/analytics integration.
Upgrades & retrofits
Upgrade camera coverage and Ex-rated hardware following a site survey.
Migrate VMS, recording and network infrastructure.
Add approved perimeter analytics and centralised event management.
Retrofit scope depends on existing OEM interfaces, component condition, available space, shutdown windows and the approval basis of any safety-related functions.
Applications
- Refineries
- Terminals
- Rigs
- Remote well pads
- Perimeter security
Testing & documentation
Relevant IEC, ISO, API, classification-society, hazardous-area or functional-safety requirements must be selected according to the specific system and installation. Where applicable, the project package may include electrical drawings, GA layouts, datasheets, I/O schedules, cause-and-effect, communication lists, inspection records, FAT/SAT procedures, calibration records and as-built documents. No unverified compliance certification is claimed here.

Common questions
Can Explosion-Proof CCTV for Oil & Gas be supplied for new build, retrofit or replacement?
The lifecycle route depends on the installed base, condition, interfaces, obsolescence and project requirements. SMEC can assess new-build, retrofit, repair or replacement scope where technically valid.
Can existing field wiring or interfaces be retained?
Possibly. Retention depends on survey findings, condition, ratings, compatibility, safety requirements, documentation and the cutover strategy.
What information is required for quotation?
Send the make/model or required specification, datasheets, drawings, ratings, interfaces, fault details where applicable, site location and required date or shutdown/mobilization window.
Can ordinary CCTV be installed in a hazardous area?
Equipment and installation must meet the site's hazardous-area classification.
Does CCTV include AI video analytics?
Analytics can be specified as an optional interface, but are not assumed in every CCTV package.
What is needed for a proposal?
Plot plan, zone classification, camera locations, retention period and network constraints.
